Paul showed the Corinthians a more excellent way. The way of Love. Being fanatical about spiritual gifts is empty without love. (1 Corinthians 12:31; 13:1-3)
The Corinthians were crazy about speaking in tongues without considering how this expression affected others. The gifts of the spirit are not for your benefit, to make you look good, but for the benefit of body (1 Corinthians 12:7).
I know I have mentioned tongues, as this was the gift Paul addressed in 1 Corinthians 14, but it will be fair to say that all gifts must be exercised in love with a drive to edify the saints.
